portafilter handles

We receive a wide variety of design requests for our handmade portafilter handles. Above is a short video outlining the handmade process.

Beer Tap Handles

Our bespoke handmade Kegulator handles are made from Australian hardwood's. Above is a short video outlining the production process.

Our Team

We are a family owned Australian business. Leon who has over 20 years experience produces the coffee parts. He is assisted by Judy and Juanita who oversee the design, production and marketing.

Traditional Approach

Leon has a background in antique restoration and has carried through his knowledge of hardwood's, finishes and traditional techniques into making the coffee parts.

Each piece is hand turned individually without the aid of duplicator tools or modern copy equipment. Likewise, the finishing and fittings are all performed by hand.

Wood Focus

Only the best natural timbers are selected, based on weight and highly figured grains.

Every vivid swirling knot and sap hole tells the story of the tree's growth and composition. To reveal the depth of hues and colours, we use flowing ergonomic designs.

If possible, the same log is used for multiple parts to ensure consistent colour and curl in the grain.

breville Parts

breville Portafilter Handles

We specialise in fitting hardwood portafilter handles for Breville coffee machines. Breville sometimes glues the portafilter handle to the head rather than using a standard screw on bolt to accommodate replacement handles. For glued handles, we can provide ready made Breville portafilters with hardwood handles. Conversely, some customers like to post in their own to us to fit the handles.

australian hardwoods

We utilize only sustainable or reclaimed Australian hardwood's which can be sourced locally.

All of the hardwoods are subject to availability, however we try to source unusual woods if requested. The following woods are currently available - Tasmanian Blackwood, Karri, Marri, Sheoak, Old Growth Jarrah, Australian Olivewood and Mulga.

Please hover the mouse over the photos on this page to reveal the types of wood used.

portafilter Bolt sizes & removal

The metal screw that holds the portrait or tamper handle to the head or base is made of either marine or construction grade stainless steel. Currently I mainly make the handles using 8mm (M8), 10mm (M10) and 12mm (M12) which fit the majority of coffee machines and tamper bases.

Unscrewing the portafilter bolts: Generally the coffee machine manufacturers will add a thread lock glue to the bolts to ensure they don't become loose over time. As such, sometimes they can be a bit stubborn to get off.

However, there are a lot of YouTube videos showing how to remove them with different methods if they have become hard to turn.

This video in particular works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2xn30dlSJ8 by using a hairdryer to heat the handle thread to soften the glue.

Once the area is heated it can be unscrewed by hand. If the handle doesn't have a bolt going through it then you can place the portafilter head in a vice to turn the handle off.

hardwood laminates

We offer a choice of colourful laminates made from cross laminated layers of hardwoods, known as lamellas which are glued together with the grain alternating at 90 degree angles for each layer. They are then bonded under heat and pressure with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives. Aside from being visually appealing, cross-laminating layers of wood veneer improves the structural properties of wood by distributing along-the-grain strength of wood in both directions which makes each handle extremely durable.

maintenance

All of our coffee parts have ergonomics in mind and are extremely robust to cope with the rigours of coffee environments. We stand behind our products, thus each piece comes with a lifetime guarantee for workmanship and refinishing.

For both the oil and beeswax and shellac finishes keep the wooden part of the portafilter clear when washing in water or cleaner fluid. Thus, do not plunge the wooden handle into any liquid as the surface will be affected and dull over time. In the event that this occurs with the oiled and wax finish we recommend applying a coat of linseed oil, teak oil or wooden furniture polish, buffing to shine. Should it occur with the shellac finish then we are happy to refinish the parts free of charge.

types of wood finishes

Oil and beeswax: 4 different natural oils are individually dried over a 5 day period and then given a bees wax finish. This age old natural and traditional method is a more environmentally friendly alternative to modern wood finishing products. The finish protects the wood and helps to bring out its true beauty by forming a rich, glossy patina that embellishes rather than distorts the natural beauty of the wood.

Hard Shellac: we use a specially formulated high gloss hard shellac as a base which gives a hard, durable finish, with resistance to marks and blemishes from water, alcohol and heat. The hardener in the polish is activated by the heat generated during the application.. As soon as the surface is dry a cross-linking begins in the finish. It is this cross-linking process which creates the hard surface. It takes around 3 weeks for the entire process to complete. However, in the mean time the work can be handled and used without fear of upsetting the process.

Sydney Coffee Roasters

We closely support and proudly endorse Sydney Coffee Roasters, who like us, established their business in the old-school way.

In a world of mass-produced, throw-away consumerism, Sydney Coffee Roasters have brought back the old-fashioned way of doing things. They personally hand select each variety of their 100% Arabica green beans, through to roasting and rigorously taste testing to ensure only the very best of the best leaves the roasters.

Their coffees come mainly from Ethiopia and Kenya in Africa, and Costa Rica, and with some specialty beans from South America and Asia. They are typically grown in high altitudes with rich, well-draining soils, and by families that have been growing sustainably for a number of generations.

All of their coffee are roasted on a hand-built heavy-duty "Has Garanti" roaster, the old-school way. No fancy computerised systems here!

They personally attend to your roast. Your roast is not part of a mass-produced batch which will be sold to many customers. It is for you alone. You can even tell them what type of roast you would prefer- light/medium/dark.
